Robots zijn steeds beter in staat om simpele taken uit te voeren en boodschappen over te brengen. Maar ze missen nog veel vaardigheden die nodig zijn voor interactie en communicatie. Daarom werken onderzoekers en kunstenaars in het nieuwe onderzoeksproject Dramaturgy for Devices samen om het gedrag en de communicatieve vaardigheden van robots te verbeteren. Marco Rozendaal: “De vaardigheden van kunstenaars zijn zeer nuttig om robots te ontwerpen die in ons dagelijks leven zullen functioneren.”

Last week, a team from IDE attended the AutomotiveUI Conference in California. Hosted by Stanford University, IDE was well represented at the conference by SPD alumnus Akshay Rege, researcher Soyeon Kim, professor Nicole Van Nes, and assistant professor Euiyoung Kim – all of whom contributed to the event in different ways, e.g. podium presentation of a joint paper, hosting a workshop, and chairing a session.

Onze schermen zijn ons dierbaar. Televisie, computer, tablet, smartphone. Ze bieden veel mogelijkheden en ze zijn - vaak - handig in gebruik. Maar wat met mensen die slechtziend of blind zijn? Wordt ook aan hun behoeften gedacht bij het ontwerp van deze apparaten? Nee, zegt IO-alumnus Konrad Krawczyk. Daarom creëerde hij een AI-gestuurde spraakassistent die mensen met een slecht gezichtsvermogen digitale skills helpt leren.

Jan-Carel Diehl, Professor in Design for Inclusive Sustainable Healthcare, combineert oplossingen voor de gezondheidszorg met zorg voor onze planeet. Zijn vele projecten maken impact van Rotterdam tot Sub-Sahara Afrika. Waar wil hij het verschil maken? Waar is hij het meeste trots op? En wat maakt een designer een meerwaarde in de zorgsector? Ontdek het in dit interview. Prof. Diehl geeft op vrijdag 11 oktober zijn intreerede in de Aula van de TU Delft.

This autumn marks the introduction of IDE’s three renewed Masters programmes. One of the unifying features is a stronger link with the world-leading research carried out in IDE. “Delft Lectures in Design - Where IDE moves the Horizons of Design Research” is a case in point. This new cross-programme course serves as a rigorous and inspiring introduction to the broad variety of IDE’s research.

From 22 July – 3 August, 20 IDE master students, 8 committee members from the ID Study Association, assistant professor Rebecca Price, and professor Gerd Kortuem travelled to Japan for a unique learning experience. The group worked on cases for three global companies, Sony, NHK Spring, and Sekisui, each of which provided its own distinct challenges and insights.

Eind juni won IO’s assistant professor Strategic Design for Ecosystem Innovation Marina Bos-de Vos twee belangrijke prijzen als eerste auteur op de European Academy of Management (EURAM) conferentie in Bath voor haar onderzoekspaper “Projecting for accelerating sustainability transitions: practices of joint value creation in circular economy programs”.

Postdoc Yifeng Shao (ImPhys) and his colleagues from Delft and Utrecht University have investigated a new imaging technique using extreme ultraviolet light to study the three-dimensional structures of chips at the nanoscale.

Two student-led projects (Biomeon and EDUSCOPE) developed at the TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering have been selected as runners-up in the 2024 James Dyson Award in the Netherlands.

IDE assistant professor Joana Soares de Oliveira Martins’ research project, “Can Ancient Cyanobacteria Save Our Planet?”, has received a €400,000 grant within the NWO's Open Competition Domain Science-M programme.

Hoe geven we reizigers een duwtje in de rug om duurzamer te reizen, zoals met de trein? Misschien kan een neutraal boekingsplatform met een duurzaamheidsscore hierbij helpen. IO-alumnus Jenske Gosens testte het uit voor haar afstudeerproject. "Zo’n platform kan reizigers zowel motiveren als faciliteren."

In het 'Code the Streets'-project wordt onderzocht hoe we de openbare weg voor verschillende activiteiten kunnen gebruiken. Maar hoe kiezen we op een eerlijke wijze waarvoor onze wegen worden gebruikt? IO-alumni Fabian Geiser ontwierp een manier die helpt om de waarden van bewoners, zoals veiligheid en inclusiviteit, in slimme navigatiesystemen te integreren.

Congratulations to John Clarkson, Professor of Healthcare Systems at IDE, who has been honoured with a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the King's Birthday Honours List 2024 for his services to Engineering and Design.

The ID student association is excited to announce that Jordan Boyle has been chosen as the IDE Educator of the Year 2024. Jordan is an assistant professor within SDE. He coordinates and teaches courses within our Bachelor's and Master’s in IPD. Jordan was selected as this year’s IDE Educator of the Year recipient for his attitude and approach to teaching.

Students from the TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design and Politecnico di Milano featured in special exhibition at Museum Angewandte Kunst (MAK) in Frankfurt.

On 15 May, ID Education hosted the 2024 Pluim Awards at ID Kafee. The event aims to shine a spotlight on the staff of IDE, thanking them for all they do within education and beyond. Click here to discover this year’s nominees and award winners.

IO-onderzoekers hebben hard gewerkt aan de publicatie van hun onderzoek. Tot de hoogtepunten van deze week behoort een artikel van IO- universitair docent Christina Schneegass dat een beeld schetst van hoe neurotechnologie het onderzoek naar en de praktijk van Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) zal veranderen.

Het voorbije jaar hebben Marco Rozendaal, Nazli Cila, Jordan Boyle en de Stichting SUSAG samengewerkt om de schilderbranche te helpen. Ze onderzochten het ontwerp van slimme hulpmiddelen, zoals robots, exoskeletten en intelligente apparaten. Samen met designbureau MUZUS en vele IO-studenten werd onderzoek gedaan, innovatieve concepten werden ontwikkeld en er werd een uitgebreide roadmap gemaakt voor de toekomst van de industrie.

Kan technologie ons misleiden via onze tastzin? En als dat zo is, hoe erg vinden we dat dan? Dark design patterns zijn trucs in apps en websites die ons aansporen tot dingen die we eigenlijk niet willen, zoals snel op 'alles accepteren' klikken bij een cookiemelding. Gijs Huisman “Het doel van mijn onderzoek is om misleidende ontwerpen in de toekomst beter te kunnen herkennen en idealieter te kunnen vermijden.”

Microbes are the most abundant and substantial group of organisms on the planet. And thanks to Professor Elvin Karana, they are now also a full part of the IDE research realm. On Wednesday 5 June Professor Karana gave her Inaugural Speech and kicked off the Centre of Design Research for Regenerative Material Ecologies (DREAM). “We continue to explore how we can embed living system thinking in material-driven design for planetary wellbeing.”

A line-up of interesting keynotes and workshops about AI Education captivated the audience on Tuesday June 4th during the fourth yearly Spring Symposium organised by TU Delft AI Initiative. From the fields of law and architecture to physics – a variety of disciplines were discussed, each showing how AI is a game changer for the future of their respective fields and the consequences this has for the education of the future. This underscores the importance of considering AI education across the whole university.

Aaron Ding heeft een EU Marie Curie-beurs ontvangen. Hij en zijn team onderzoeken de komende vier jaar robuuste oplossingen om veerkrachtige 6G digitale infrastructuur te bieden bij zowel cyber- als fysieke aanvallen in toekomstige 6G-netwerken. Er is een totaalbedrag van €1,5 miljoen toegewezen aan het consortium ENSURE-6G.
