The company
We are Beyond Bounds, a design-led startup revolutionizing the lighting industry with customizable, 3D-printed lamps. By combining technology with sustainability, we aim to create designer lighting that is both accessible and eco-friendly.
We are currently exploring new frontiers in 3D printing, and we invite a talented TU Delft student to join us in this innovative project.
The Assignment
The goal of this project is to push the boundaries of 3D printing technology for our next collection of designer lighting. You will focus on one or more of these three research areas:
- Material Exploration:
Investigate new, sustainable materials for 3D printing, including recycled filaments and bioplastics. Test and evaluate the mechanical properties of these materials to ensure durability and aesthetic appeal in lighting applications. Research ways to minimize support material, reducing waste and increasing efficiency in the printing process.
- Print Optimization:
Experiment with advanced slicing techniques to reduce print inconsistencies and improve the quality of the final product. Explore innovative structures and infill patterns that enhance strength while maintaining a lightweight design. Develop strategies to reduce post-processing time and labor, optimizing our production workflow.
- Innovative Finishes:
Utilize tools like Blender Geometry Nodes to create unique surface patterns and textures directly on the 3D model. Research and implement new finishing techniques that can add value and distinctiveness to the products (e.g., coating or texturing). Test these finishes for durability and visual appeal, ensuring they align with our brand's high-quality standards.
Your Role
As a graduation student, you will work closely with our design and production team. You will have the freedom to experiment, prototype, and test your ideas in our studio, located at the VU Amsterdam. This is a unique opportunity to contribute directly to a product line that will be launched to market, allowing you to see your innovations come to life.

Requirements
- Background in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong interest in 3D printing technology, materials research, and design optimization.
- Experience with CAD software (Blender, Rhino, or similar) and familiarity with 3D printing processes.
- A proactive attitude and willingness to experiment and iterate.
