TU Delft Education Day 2024: Inspired – The Magic of Meaningful Moments

On Thursday 7 November, the annual TU Delft Education Day took place, bringing together faculty members from various disciplines to explore and exchange insights and practices under the theme Inspired – The Magic of Meaningful Moments.

Organised by the Teaching Academy and chaired by Annoesjka Cabo (Academic Director Teaching Academy) this festive day offered a wide variety of perspectives and educational experiences. It showcased the dedication of session leaders, speakers, and attendees to education, to learning and to embracing “Inspiration” in Education.

The event highlights included an opening video on Inspiration, two inspiring keynote speakers, a plenary session organised by SPiCE, thirteen interactive sessions from TU Delft educators, an award ceremony, a reflective end-of-the-day-practice, and time for making meaningful connections.

The day kicked-off with a short opening video where educators and students shared their different views on inspiration.

One of the greatest moments I think that any teacher can ever experience is the moment when you see in a student that they are now seeing the world with different eyes.

This was followed by Ibo van de Poel, this year’s TU Delft Leermeester, with his inspiring keynote philosophising on ‘What is Inspiration’, addressing different perspective on the theme. From Inspired by & Inspired to, scaling inspiration from apathy to obsession, raising the possible need for an imperfect educational system, to focusing on the importance of nurturing students’ inspiration.

TU Delft’s student organisation, SPiCE (Students as Partners in Co-creating Education), also nicely highlighted the need of nurturing students’ inspiration. Through a presentation of student timelines, they illustrated moments of (loss of) inspiration. A commonality in the presented timelines was that the sense of belonging, and a safe space to learn play a big role in experiencing a positive effect on the inspiration scale.

Unveiling of TU Delft Teaching Team of the Year

In the afternoon keynote speaker Jessica Kuitenbrouwer brought a generational perspective and showed us a way of looking at our students, generation Z, and ourselves that might provide us with more understanding. Understanding on how generations view the world, how we communicate and where we can find and enhance each other.

The Education Day also celebrated outstanding achievements among TU Delft educators. Seven new TU Delft Education fellows were announced, along with the Education Team of the Year Award, which went to ‘Team POW from the faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment’, and the Educator of the Year Award, presented to Miriam Blaauboer from the faculty of Applied Science.

In between the keynotes the event featured two rounds of interactive sessions led by TU Delft educators, sharing educational practices relating to ‘Inspired’ and facilitating meaningful connections among participants.

The closing exercise of the day was organized by Kristel Aalbers taking us on a journey to reflect on the day making a really nice connection to the innovative POW-weeks recently introduced to the students of Architecture and the built environment.
