Teaching Academy brings ‘SPiCE’

The TU Delft Teaching Academy now also has an interfaculty student team going by the name ‘SPiCE’. This team is actively involved in exploring educational themes, designing, testing, experimenting and evaluating in education innovations. As a result, SPiCE works on different projects and is involved in different innovation stages. The overall aim is to bring the student perspective to light and to provide the students an active role in cocreating education at the TU Delft. In this article you will meet one of the student members and discover more about the projects the team is currently working on.

SPiCE team

SPiCE team consists of 12 students: 2 project leads and 10 student members from different bachelors and masters. This way, the student perspective needed for all the projects is as broad as possible

SPiCE consists of, from left to right, Elize van Dongen, Emma van Dongen, Twan Beekman, Esther Wit, Albaraa Khalil, Eva Horlings, Alexandra Yach, Julius Jorna, Sumeia Yassiri, Hanne Bosma, Viktoria Proffen and Casper Sandkuyl (not in picture).

Meet a member

One of the members is Sumeia Yassiri, a master's student in Chemical Engineering. When asked about her motivation to join this team, she tells us: ‘For me it felt only logical to join. During my bachelor’s, I completed a minor in Education and obtained my teaching certificate in high school chemistry. I always knew I wanted to do something related to education, but being an assistant for a single course in my faculty felt too narrow. I didn't want to confine myself’. SPiCE is indeed designed to make a difference in education around the TU Delft campus. And she adds jokingly: ‘The applied sciences building is at the other side of the planet… I mean, campus. Somebody from there has to join to voice our needs’.

The team is led by Viktoria Proffen and Hanne Bosma, both master’s students in Industrial Design Engineering. Their experience as teaching assistants sparked their interest in education. Hanne shared her motivation, saying, ‘A lot of educational innovations seem to remain restricted to individual faculties. I hope that by working across faculties, we can really kickstart these improvements to a new level.’ Viktoria added, ‘I'm excited about the possible impact we could have on TU-wide education. I want to make education more accessible and inclusive for all.’ They believe that bringing the student perspective into these discussions can drive significant change, and they are inspired by the diverse group of members within SPiCE. Viktoria highlights, 'It's inspiring to work with such a diverse group of people. Each faculty brings unique perspectives and solutions, making our efforts much more impactful.’

First projects: AI and Mathematics Summer School

Currently the team is working on two projects simultaneously. The first project is given by Rob Mudde from the CvB, where the student's perspective on the usage of AI in Education is asked. This input can be used for future regulations, guidelines, and projects. The second project is led by Yuki Murakami, assistant professor at Delft Insitute of Mathematics (DIAM). The goal is to improve the course evaluation of the Mathematics Summer School for upcoming first year students.
