Thematic minors for TU Delft students
Do you study at a university in Leiden (including the joint-degree bachelor's programme MST) or Rotterdam or at another educational institution? For more information, please visit the page for Leiden and Rotterdam or external students.
Here you can find new information for academic year 2024-2025
Self composed minorWithin your bachelor's programme, you can fill in your minor in various ways. Would you like to broaden or deepen your knowledge? Learn to think in a different way and/or study in a different city? Then you could take a thematic minor at Delft University of Technology, but also in Leiden, Rotterdam, or (far) beyond. TU Delft offers various thematic minors with which you can broaden your knowledge or specialise within your field.
You can register for a thematic minor in Delft, Leiden or Rotterdam via Eduxchange. There are different registration periods, so be sure to check when you can register for your preferred thematic minor.
Good to know: You cannot register for a thematic minor while you are registered and in the process for studying abroad for your minor.
Selection minors
For a selection minor, in addition to a on-time (pre-)registration via EduXchange, you may be required to submit additional documents. Read the information in EduXchange under the heading 'good to know' to find out what type of selection is applied and what the deadlines are for submitting the additional criteria. For Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam thematic selection minors, you can apply in April. The results will be communicated in the first week of May.
(Pre-)registration period | 2 April 2024 (13:00) | Up to | 15 April 2024 (23:59) |
Please note - You can only withdraw before registration during the (pre-)registration period in April. After you have been selected and placed, you cannot deregister. You can register for a maximum of 30 EC during this (pre-)registration period. Only your highest preference counts.
-
For Delft students, there is a late-registration period* for thematic selection minors in May. The same selection procedure applies and selection is on the basis of spots still available.
Late-registration period 1 May 2024 (13:00) Till 15 May 2024 (23:59) *You cannot withdraw your (pre-)registration during this period. Not all selection minor offers the possibility of late-registration. This is because, for example, a selection minor is full or because the selection minor itself has indicated that it does not have a late-registration period. Please also note that you cannot register to another minor as long as you have an ongoing registration for a selection minor. Therefore, if you are not placed, another non-selection minor may already be full in the meantime.
-
No, after you have been selected and finally placed you cannot deregister anymore.
You also cannot withdraw during the late-registration period in May until a decision has been made on the selection and possible placement. If, for whatever reason, you decide not to participate in a selection minor, you only have the option to compose a self-composed minor. You cannot use a self-composed minor to pursue a TU Delft non-selection minor.
Non-selection minors
For non-selection minors, direct registration applies (no lottery draw) and admission is based on your current study programme. There is a limited number of places available. It is therefore possible that your preferred minor is full. For Leiden, Delft and Rotterdam thematic non-selection minors, including joint-minors, you can apply in May.
Registration period | 15 May 2024 (13:00) | Up to | 31 Augustus 2024 (23:59) |
In the month May, places are reserverd for Leiden and Rotterdam students. In June, unfilled reserved places will be made available to all students.
Please note that the registration period for joint minors (non-selection) differs. If the joint minor is offered by Leiden University, the application period is from May 15 - 31 2024. If the joint minor is offered by TU Delft or Erasmus University Rotterdam then the application period is from May 15 - July 15 2024.

You can deregister, up till 15 July, via MyTUDelft if you have registered for a thematic minor at TU Delft and decide not to participate.
*Once you are placed on a selection minor, you cannot deregister.
If you have registered for a thematic minor in Leiden or Rotterdam and decide not to participate, you can deregister via the partner university. You cannot deregister via Eduxchange or MyTUDelft.
* Each university may have a different deadline for deregistration.
If you are unable to deregister, please contact the relevant (partner) university. Please mention your (local) student number and the minor you want to deregister for. (Processing may take up to 5 working days).
-
If you have decided not to go abroad for exchange (also called; 'minor Study Abroad' or 'Semester Mobility') you will have to inform your faculty international office. After your deregistration, your linked Minor Study Abroad (this linked minor is called 'Semester Mobility') will be removed in MyTUDelft. You can then register for another thematic or self-composed minor.
Please note; Your deregistration in MyTUDelft is processed within three working days. Please therefore take into account the applicable registration periods for the selection and non-selection minors. It is not possible to qualify for a thematic minor if the registration period has closed. Also, requests to apply via email or your faculty international office will not be processed. (For example: if you deregister for exchange on 16 April, you will no longer be eligible for a selection minor).
-
- Minors from partner institutions may take longer than one semester.
- You are responsible for timely and valid registration.
- You can have a maximum of 30 credits of minor registration per year.
- You can only register for thematic minors to which your bachelor's programme gives access.
- For selection minors, you will receive notification of possible placement early May.
- For non-selection minors, you will be notified immediately whether you have been placed.
- Students in the MST bachelor's programme can only apply via Leiden for TU Delft minors in April and May
-
You consciously choose how to fill your minor space. It is therefore not possible to use a thematic minor as a back up option.
The maximum number of credits you can register for each year is 30 EC. If, for instance, you want to go on an exchange or an internship, you cannot arrange a back-up in the form of a thematic minor. You will have to deregister before you can register for a thematic minor.
-
It may be the case that another university has a different academic year than TU Delft.
This may have an impact on your further studies at that university. Be sure to have a look at the academic year structure beforehand. -
The timetables of Delft minors is known in July/August. The timetables and arrangement of blocks/semesters at other educational institutes may differ. So, pay attention to when the minor of your choice starts and ends.
-
The regulations governing your programme apply to including your minor in your examination programme. In some cases, prior approval from the board of examiners is required. A successful application does not automatically mean that you can also include the minor in your degree programme.
Please consult these regulations and your programme and examination board if you have any questions. -
To pass a thematic minor, you must take it in its entirety and complete it with a passing grade.
Completion of the minor is subject to the regulations of the relevant programme under which your chosen minor falls. If you have any questions, please contact the Minor Coordinator of the relevant thematic minor.

Students from a joint-degree programme apply to the administrative respondible university for a minor and thus follow that institution's procedure (see diagram below).
