UTQ DESIGN
In this module you will focus on designing teaching and learning experiences using a systematic approach for increased student motivation and engagement. Also, you will critically evaluate the embedment of your course in the broader curriculum so that your course design is aligned with the corresponding curricular characteristics and the current educational methodologies. Through hands-on activities you learn to design or redesign your course in a feasible manner by applying the principle of Constructive Alignment.
-
The UTQ involves the development and documentation of five didactic competences in a personal UTQ dossier.
Competence 1: designing or redesigning education
- Explain how their course is embedded in the curriculum or degree programme as a whole.
- Design teaching based on the principles of ‘constructive alignment’.
- Design active, effective, and efficient learning methods and learning materials.
- Design their teaching with respect to the specific (curricular) characteristics and needs of the students.
- Design their teaching in a practically and logistically feasible (doable) way.
Competence 2: teaching and supervising
- Prepare an educational meeting.
- Conduct an educational meeting and reflect on their performance.
- Supervise students, individually and in groups.
Competence 3: assessment
- Design and implement the assessment of student development and learning outcomes.
- Analyse the assessment results and draw conclusions.
Competence 4: evaluating teaching
- Conduct an evaluation and collect information (data) purposefully to improve their teaching.
- Analyse evaluation results, draw conclusions, and pinpoint areas for improvement.
Competence 5: professionalisation
- Formulate their own vision on teaching and student learning.
- Manage their work as a teacher and collaborate in a teaching team.
- Reflect on their work as a teacher and on their future professional development in teaching.

Working method during the module
When you participate in the module DESIGN, you work on the UTQ competence Re(designing) education. During the module you will be (re)designing an existing course that you are or will be involved in soon. You will participate in a dynamic learning environment that stimulates peer-feedback; peer to peer conversations; but also, consultations and discussions of your plans with the rest of your team members at your faculty that are involved in this course. Learning from each other is a key element in the UTQ.
You will be exploring the different conditions and curriculum requirements so that you can design the different steps of your students’ learning and assessment process. We will follow a step-by-step design process that will capture your personal vision on education and strategies for increased motivation. We will focus on the relevant rules and regulations of the course, the relevant conditions, and the curricular characteristics, such as the type of the required education. This exploration process will lead you to a robust design of active learning activities and assessments that are aligned with the given Learning Objectives of your course in a feasible and practical manner.
- Blended learning
- combining face-to-face instruction with online learning
- Flipped classroom
- Preparing for class by learning the theory and completing task,
- then applying what you have learned during the live sessions).
- Each session has preparation (minimal preparation prior to the first session).
- Number of sessions: 3
- Study load: 30 hours (on average)
- English, unless all participants speak Dutch
Certificate
A certificate for DESIGN is granted, if you have attended all sessions and you have successfully completed the Proof of Competence.
Costs and admission and attendance
The cost for this module is 700 euros.
Because there is a high demand for the modules we want to accommodate as many participants as possible. To do this, we ask you to prioritise the module and be present at all sessions. The first session is essential to follow the module and cannot be missed. If you cannot attend this session, we ask you to unsubscribe and subscribe for another edition. This can be done free of charge until two weeks before the first session.
