UTQ DESIGN
The UTQ module DESIGN focuses on designing teaching and learning experiences using a systematic approach to improve student motivation and engagement. In this module, you will critically evaluate how your course fits in the broader curriculum to ensure alignment with the corresponding curricular characteristics and the current educational methodologies. Through hands-on activities, you will design or redesign your course in a feasible manner, applying the principles of Constructive Alignment.
-
The UTQ involves the development and documentation of five didactic competences in a personal UTQ dossier. After completion the teacher is able to:
Competence 1: Designing or Redesigning Education
- Explain how their course is embedded in the curriculum or degree programme as a whole.
- Design teaching based on the principles of ‘constructive alignment’.
- Design active, effective, and efficient learning methods and learning materials.
- Design their teaching with respect to the specific (curricular) characteristics and needs of the students.
- Design their teaching in a practically and logistically feasible (doable) way.
Competence 2: Teaching and Supervising
- Prepare an educational meeting.
- Conduct an educational meeting and reflect on their performance.
- Supervise students, individually and in groups.
Competence 3: Assessment
- Design and implement the assessment of student development and learning outcomes.
- Analyse the assessment results and draw conclusions.
Competence 4: Evaluating Teaching
- Conduct an evaluation and collect information (data) purposefully to improve their teaching.
- Analyse evaluation results, draw conclusions, and pinpoint areas for improvement.
Competence 5: Professionalisation
- Formulate their own vision on teaching and student learning.
- Manage their work as a teacher and collaborate in a teaching team.
- Reflect on their work as a teacher and on their future professional development in teaching.

Lecturers participating in the UTQ programme.
Working Method during the Module
This module addresses the UTQ competence of Re(designing) education. Participants will be (re)design an existing course they are or will be involved in soon. Participate in a dynamic learning environment that stimulates peer-feedback; peer to peer conversations; but also, consultations and discussions of your plans with the rest of your team members at your faculty involved in the course. Learning from each other is a key element in the UTQ.
Participants will be exploring the different conditions and curriculum requirements so that they can design the different steps of their students’ learning and assessment process. We will follow a step-by-step design process that will capture their personal vision on education and strategies for increased motivation. We will focus on the relevant rules and regulations of the course, the relevant conditions, and the curricular characteristics, such as the type of the required education. This exploration process will lead participants to a robust design of active learning activities and assessments that are aligned with the given Learning Objectives of their course in a feasible and practical manner.
- Blended learning: combining face-to-face instruction with online learning.
- Flipped classroom: participants prepare by studying theory and completing tasks before applying these in live sessions.
- Frequency: three sessions.
- Study load: 30 hours (on average)
- Language: English (unless all participants speak Dutch)
Certificate
A certificate for DESIGN is granted upon attending all sessions and successfully completing the Proof of Competence.
Costs, Admission and Attendance
Cost: 700 euros.
Attendance: Because there is a high demand for the modules we want to accommodate as many participants as possible. To do this, we ask you to prioritise the module and be present at all sessions. The first session is essential to follow the module and cannot be missed. If you cannot attend this session, we ask you to unsubscribe and subscribe for another edition. This can be done free of charge until two weeks before the first session.
Prerequisites
- Completion of the Fundamentals module.
- Confirmation that you have the required educational tasks during the module.
