Designers go out into the world to solve big picture problems. Issues related to sustainability, health or the energy transition for example. As a consequence, they encounter resistance to change. How do we prepare designers to be strong and capable? Dream Team ‘Space Oasis Delft’ has designed a lunar village for 150+ residents. The dwellings have elements of biomimicry, contain a self-sustaining biosphere and simulate a day-night cycle as well as seasons. Smart design choices safeguard not only the occupants' safety but also their mental well-being.

Congratulations to John Clarkson, Professor of Healthcare Systems at IDE, who has been honoured with a Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the King's Birthday Honours List 2024 for his services to Engineering and Design.

The ID student association is excited to announce that Jordan Boyle has been chosen as the IDE Educator of the Year 2024. Jordan is an assistant professor within SDE. He coordinates and teaches courses within our Bachelor's and Master’s in IPD. Jordan was selected as this year’s IDE Educator of the Year recipient for his attitude and approach to teaching.

David Abbink ontvangt dit jaar de NWO Stevinpremie. De Stevinpremie en de Spinozapremie zijn de hoogste Nederlandse onderscheidingen in de wetenschap. Ze worden jaarlijks uitgereikt aan vier mensen in totaal ‘voor hun uitmuntende, baanbrekende en inspirerende werk’, aldus NWO, die dit nieuws vandaag bekend maakt. Abbink ontvangt 1,5 miljoen euro te besteden aan wetenschappelijk onderzoek en kennisbenutting. Hij ontvangt de Stevinpremie met name voor de maatschappelijke impact van zijn onderzoek.

IDE researchers have been hard at work getting their research published. This week’s highlights include a paper from IDE assistant professor Christina Schneegass that contributes a vision of how neurotechnology will transform Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) research and practice.

Over the past year, Marco Rozendaal, Nazli Cila, and Jordan Boyle have been collaborating with the SUSAG Foundation to advance the professional painting industry by exploring the design and implementation of smart agents, like robots, exoskeletons, and intelligent equipment. In partnership with MUZUS and many students from IDE, they have conducted research, developed innovative concepts, and created a comprehensive roadmap for the industry’s future.

Can technology deceive us through our sense of touch? And if so, how much do we mind? Dark design patterns are tricks in apps and websites that prompt us to do things we don't really want, such as quickly clicking ‘accept all’ on a cookie notification. Gijs Huisman: ‘The aim of my research is to be able to better recognise misleading designs in the future and more ideally avoid them.’

Microbes are the most abundant and substantial group of organisms on the planet. And thanks to Professor Elvin Karana, they are now also a full part of the IDE research realm. On Wednesday 5 June Professor Karana gave her Inaugural Speech and kicked off the Centre of Design Research for Regenerative Material Ecologies (DREAM). “We continue to explore how we can embed living system thinking in material-driven design for planetary wellbeing.”

Prof. ir. J.L. Spoormaker passed away in his hometown of Oegstgeest at the end of April at the age of 82. He was associated with the Faculty of Industrial Design for more than 20 years as professor, dean, graduate professor and as supervisor.

When your coffee maker or smartphone stops working, do you repair or replace it? While extending the lifespan of products is a fundamental aspect of the circular economy, getting people to make the sustainable choice is not always easy. For her PhD, Renske van den Berge wanted to understand why consumers replace electronic products and explore how several design and marketing strategies could support the consumer to extend product lifetimes.

This week’s highlights include an award-winning paper, authored by PhD candidate Clarice Risseeuw and her supervisors Holly McQuillan, Joana Martins, and Elvin Karana, which delves into the realm of direct interactions with Flavobacteria.

While government AI systems have the potential to improve things like efficient delivery of services to citizens, they can also harm people’s autonomy. So, how can public AI systems be designed to ensure citizens maintain control over their lives? Through his PhD research, Kars Alfrink says giving citizens a say in when, how, and for what purposes these systems are developed and used is vital.

As designers, how do we explain what we do? There's a wide range of design labels to choose from. And it makes sense. Labels are a way for us as designers to indicate what we do, how we do it and what we value. What if we had a framework which allows us to explain every aspect of our design practice? IDE researchers Pieter Jan Stappers, Froukje Sleeswijk Visser and Annemiek van Boeijen developed such a framework.

The EU Innovation Radar, which compiles cutting-edge EU-funded innovations, just published five innovations created within the COALA consortium. The COALA project designed and developed an AI-Powered Cognitive Assistant for the manufacturing sector. TU Delft was a key contributor for most of the innovations claimed in COALA.

Where is the future of mobility taking us? What is a meaningful mobility solution? During the last nine weeks, 80 students in the Reimagining Mobility Bachelor elective led by Eui Young Kim, have explored these questions. The theme of this year was redesigning air travel. The students designed a future mobility concept presented in a digital advertorial format and showcased their work at an exhibition on 15 April. Let’s explore some of these projects.

As a fashion and textile design engineer, IDE researcher Holly McQuillan wants to change the fashion industry by introducing it to the woven textile-form technique, a kind of 3D weaving which involves creating three-dimensional form by using the weaving process. Through this she wants to make the industry more sustainable by providing realistic tools. “Automated 3D weaving increases control and flexibility, and may make production more cost efficient.”

IDE students have once again shown that taking initiative can be key in creating a better designed environment. Since 2024, tea and coffee drinkers on campus have been required to use reusable cups. Upon finding that 65% of students experience difficulty in keeping their cups clean, a group of IDE students designed the Jelt Cup Cleaning Station. And now, TU Delft has agreed to do a pilot run of their stations on campus. You can test them out for yourself from 22 April to 3 May in the Aula, BK, and library

Governments increasingly see the value of design practices in public service and policy issues, but there are obstacles when it comes to implementation. As an emerging field, there is not much knowledge on design in the public sector. Through her PhD research, Ahmee Kim set out to explore what hinders design for policy practices and how embedding design in organisations can create value, helping local governments to better serve their communities.

The work of recent IDE graduates will feature at Milan Design Week later this month. Interdependence is an exhibition featuring 125 student projects from international design schools.

A team of IDE educators have contributed to the TUD Open Interactive Textbook Project with their open source textbook Computational design for (industrial) designers using Rhino Grasshopper. The interactive book is intended for students both at bachelor and master level and focusses on the use of computational design to create human-centred, personalized products. It offers an introduction, and more advanced knowledge base by way of short videos, structured lessons and links to more information or helpful resources.
