Programme in detail
The Heating and Cooling track of the Master’s programme Sustainable Energy Technology offers eight profiles: Heat Sources, Heat in Buildings, Large-Scale Heat Systems, Waste & Combined Heat and Power, Solar Energy, Power Engineering and Economics & Society. These profiles are organised in seven cluster options, so-called profile clusters. Each profile cluster consists of three different profiles, which in turn are made up of courses in the particular energy field addressed in the profile. Together, they prepare the students to deal with current topics in sustainable energy technology. During the first quarter of the first year, students choose their profile cluster.
Please find below the eight profiles followed by an overview of the seven profile clusters.

How to choose your profile cluster
Because the profile clusters cover a very broad range of topics, many students do not possess the background knowledge for all profiles in a cluster. The table below shows which background fits best with the clusters:
Heat Supply Systems | Heat Grids & Economics | Urban Heat & Economics | Heat & Power Grids | Urban Heat & Electricity | Industrial Heat & Electricity Integration | Smart building and Grid Integration
Mechanical/Mechatronics/ Materials Engineering | √ | √ | √ | √
Electrical Engineering/Electronics | √ | √
Chemical Engineering/Chemistry | √ | √ | √ | √ | √
Aerospace Engineering | √ | √ | √ | √
(Applied) Physics/Astronomy | √ | √ | √ | √
Applied Earth Sciences/ Mining/Reservoir Engineering | √ | √ | √ | √ |
Prepare for other profile clusters
If you would like to choose a profile cluster for which you might NOT have all required knowledge based on your Bachelor programme, it is strongly recommended to prepare yourself before the start of the academic year in Delft.
The table below provides an overview of the topics which you are recommended to prepare for each cluster (per different bachelor’s degree background):
Heat Supply Systems | Heat Grids & Economics | Urban Heat & Economics | Heat & Power Grids | Urban Heat & Electricity | Industrial Heat & Electricity Integration | Smart building and Grid Integration
Mechanical/Mechatronics/ Materials Engineering | √ | √ | √ | Electrical Engineering | √ | Chemistry | Electrical Engineering |
Electrical Engineering/Electronics | Thermo-dynamics | Thermo-dynamics | Thermo-dynamics | √ | Thermo-dynamics | Thermo-dynamics & Chemistry | √ |
Chemical Engineering/Chemistry | √ | √ | √ | Electrical Engineering | √ | √ | Electrical Engineering |
Aerospace Engineering | √ | √ | √ | Electrical Engineering | √ | Chemistry | Electrical Engineering |
(Applied) Physics/Astronomy | √ | √ | √ | Electrical Engineering | √ | Chemistry | Electrical Engineering |
Applied Earth Sciences/ Mining/Reservoir Engineering | √ | √ | √ | Electrical Engineering | √ | Chemistry | Electrical Engineering |
Thermodynamics
For thermodynamics, we do not offer specific linkage courses, but it is possible to follow certain courses offered by edX:
- Course on transport phenomena (offered at certain moments in a year)
- Course on thermodynamics (offered at certain moments in a year)
