Admission, Application & Finances

Students are admissible if they are in possession of a (Dutch) university level BSc degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • (Applied) Physics
  • (Applied) Mathematics
  • Computer Science (and Engineering)
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Astronomy

Additional to the aforementioned degrees, students need to demonstrably and successfully complete prior to admission:

  • At least 5 EC of linear algebra courses
  • At least 5 EC of calculus courses
  • At least 5 EC of quantum mechanics or quantum information courses at the level of D.J. Griffiths’ "Introduction to Quantum mechanics" or M.A. Nielsen & I.L. Chuang’s “Quantum information and quantum computation” or equivalent
  • An individual research project of at least 12 EC during the final year of their bachelor’s programme, at the level of a final bachelor’s project (‘BEP’) at Delft University of Technology or Leiden University

International applicants need to prove that they have a similar degree to what is listed above. We can only judge international applications that are completed through the official admission procedure, see https://www.tudelft.nl/onderwijs/toelating-en-aanmelding/msc-international-diploma.

Remarks

  1. Every application will be reviewed by the admissions committee, which will also make the final decision.
  2. Applicants with a BSc degree in a discipline other than those mentioned above or a BSc degree from a Dutch University of Applied Sciences are not eligible for admission.

Important note for students with a bachelor diploma in other disciplines than Physics or Mathematics

The core (compulsory) part of this master programme involves a lot of mathematics and physics. You must therefore have sufficient proficiency in both of these disciplines, with at the very least physics having been part of your high school final exams (or, if you have a Dutch high school diploma, a ‘Natuur & Techniek’ profile). In case your bachelor programme did not involve courses on statistics and differential equations, you may have to put in additional work on these topics during the first semester of the master programme.

If you want to refresh your high school Physics, you can make use of our Pre-University Physics MOOC.
If you are in doubt whether you satisfy these requirements, or have any other questions, feel free to contact us via Info-MSc-QIST@tudelft.nl

Minor Quantum Science and Quantum Information

Bachelor students who are interested in the master QIST are recommended to join the minor Quantum Science and Quantum Information during the minor period. For students from (Applied) Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering, and Electrical Engineering this will fulfil the requirement for ‘at least 5 EC of quantum mechanics or quantum information’ as listed above.

Note for international students: in the first semester of year 1 of this master programme you will need to travel between Delft and Leiden (typically 2-3 days per week). This commute involves a ±18 minute train journey plus some biking/walking at both ends. Also in later semesters, depending e.g. on your choice of elective courses and master’s thesis project, travel between the two cities may be required (although perhaps less frequently than in the first semester). Please note that the travel costs are not reimbursed by the programme.
