IDE alumni make Het Financieele Dagblad Talents 2022
Ten of the fifty Het Financieele Dagblad Talents 2022 have ties to Delft and of those ten, three studied at IDE. With their innovative and distinctive ideas, they are helping the world move forward and making us take a closer look at our waste streams. A big congratulations goes out to Jerry de Vos, Susanna Osinga, and Simon van der Jagt.
Jerry de Vos – Plastic Scanner
With his Plastic Scanner, IDE alumnus Jerry de Vos has designed a handheld device that can quickly tell you what kind of plastic something is made of. Knowing this is crucial for better reuse and recycling of the growing worldwide plastic waste. His innovative and creative design is a great example of what design can do when it comes to our most pressing sustainability issues. It even landed him the prestigious James Dyson Award 2021 Sustainability Prize. Jerry invented the plastic scanner while he was completing his master’s in Integrated Product Design at IDE. Susanna Osinga – Reusable Wrapping Paper
At the 2021 HEMA Design Contest, IDE alumna Susanna Osinga took home the public award for her ‘Herpakpapier’ (reusable wrapping paper) project. She developed the project during the 2020-2021 Q4 edition of BEP. According to Susanna, after being used six times, it is already more environmentally friendly than ordinary wrapping paper. "I am an industrial designer, a problem solver".

Simon van der Jagt - Nowi
While studying at TU Delft, IDE alumnus Simon van der Jagt and IO alumnus en IO docent Omar Link developed a chip that makes disposable batteries superfluous. "Our chip can use ambient energy such as light and vibration to power everyday products. The chip is efficient, small and cost-effective,” says Simon van der Jagt. In the past year, Simon's Delft-based company Nowi has grown from twenty to forty employees and has already produced one million chips.
