Matthijs Plokker (M.Sc., M.Sc.) joined the Fatigue & Damage Tolerance department of Airbus in 2006. In the last 10 years he was active in specific design work and testing for the Airbus aircraft A400M, A330-200F, A350 and A330neo. Mr Plokker obtained a M.Sc. degree from Delft University of Technology on the topic of FML and F&DT in 2005 and a second M.Sc. on Composite Fatigue in 2008 at PFH Stade. In the last two years he was active on A330neo as Stress Leader for FAF and studying future optimizations of this aircraft.

Forward Thinking on an A330 Future Fuselage

In frame of a Request For Work (RFW) a detailed study has been performed how a future A330 fuselage could look like. This study is based on the current A330 and is addressing several aspects of this future model, like manufacturing & industrial, passenger comfort and performance.

Several new materials, processes and technologies where taken into consideration with a realistic application window of 2019-2022. This portfolio of topics was bundled for short term and mid-term use.

The application of FML on A330 brings advantages in terms of weight, cost by use of larger shells and increased level of damage tolerance. A detailed study was made on the recurring cost of the FWD sections. Also the Customer acceptance and experience of FML based on 10 years of operating A380 was audited.

Finally some future thoughts and considerations on FML and added value are given.
