Graduation Marc Aliana Guardia | Recycling 3D prints Marc Aliana Guardia has graduated from the faculty of Industrial Design Engineering with his research on recycling 3D prints in a prototyping facility. With his research Marc has investigated the opportunity of reusing the PLA waste stream that comes from prototyping facilities. Recyling waste and failed prints back to FDM filament, closing the material loop. In his research Marc investigated the role of FDM in prototyping design for product development, the most popular material and its current end-of-life scenario. He identified an opportunity in low-fidelity prototyping, where high mechanical properties and high-quality prototypes are not always required. He tested and demonstrated that recycled PLA filament produced with a desktop recycling setup can be 3D printed with a desktop FDM printer, achieving similar low‑fidelity prototyping capabilities for design projects as virgin PLA filament, thus enabling the use of recycled PLA from 3D printing waste for low-fidelity prototyping. The findings of his reserach are converged and conceptualized into a future vision, a roadmap and a short-term solution to explore and facilitate the implementation of PLA recycling for prototyping. Collaboration Festo CDAM and Festo have started a new collaboration. Festo is a multinational in industrial control and motion systems and is producing and selling pneumatic and electrical control and drive technology for factory or process automation. Festo will be supporting CDAM in its research to implement product design and adapt the design process to the industry 4.0. A graduate will research the needs and possibilities for transcended manufacturing. With the support of Festo the graduate will develop and prototype a Hybrid CNC system which is able to use additive and subtractive fabrication methods to cater to the needs of transcended manufacturing and the new Industry 4.0 factory. Next to that at the faculty soft grippers and the application of soft grippers in robotics is researched. Both directions have overlapping applications with Festo. Their knowledge and support in regard to gripping technologies is a significant contribution to this research. Project MARCH Collaboration CDAM and Oceanz collaborated with project MARCH to help them realize their current prototype exoskeleton MARCH IVc. Project MARCH is a student team of the TU Delft which is involved in the development of a user-friendly and versatile exoskeleton, a motorized robotic suit, that can be used to get people with a spinal cord injury to stand up and walk again. CDAM and Oceanz had a helping hand in the design and creation of the 3D printed covers that cover all the electronics on the exoskeleton. Oceanz's professional 3D printing facilities were used to print the covers. Exoskeleton Covers Assembly After a year of hard work the team of project MARCH revealed the new exoskeleton on the 20th of August with a live demonstration. During this demonstration their pilot Sjaan demonstrated the capabilities of the exoskeleton by walking the Cybathlon run. Now the 5th project MARCH team has handed over the ropes to the new student team which will continue with realizing the vision of project MARCH.
