C-Spec
With a team of industrial and biomedical engineers, we are developing a device for cervical cancer screening in resource-constrained settings: the C-Spec. Currently, the cervical cancer screening procedure typically involves inserting a speculum and applying acetic acid to highlight precancerous lesions. This procedure poses several challenges: the speculum is often a notable factor in women’s reluctance to undergo cervical cancer screening, and visual assessment is highly dependent on the healthcare professional's expertise, leading to variable performance.
The C-Spec aims to address these challenges by designing a device with a smaller diameter and an integrated camera to increase comfort and provide internal visualization of the cervix. Furthermore, we plan to incorporate artificial intelligence into the device in the future to assist in decision-making. With funding from FAST, we can improve the current device and explore the implementation of AI through field research and algorithm training.
