Turnitin to replace Ouriginal as plagiarism detection tool per next academic year

Provided by ESA Information Management

The current plagiarism tooling (Ouriginal) in Brightspace will be replaced with a plagiarism detection tool from Turnitin per the upcoming new Academic year 2024-2025.

The new workflow with the Turnitin integration offers a deeper integration in the Brightspace Assignment workflow and will simplify the plagiarism detection process for instructors. For students it will be easier to view the similarity reports (if activated by the instructor) in the Brightspace Assignment interface where they are already accustomed to viewing feedback on handed in work.

Timeline

We are currently working towards making the new tooling by Turnitin available in Brightspace courses for the new academic year, which will become available for instructors on August 1st. From then on you will be able to set up new Brightspace Assignments with Turnitin or amend existing Brightspace Assignments to activate the new plagiarism tooling.

We are currently working with both suppliers to make sure that previously uploaded content, currently stored, in Ouriginal is migrated to Turnitin, so our own database of student work remains intact and available for future reference. Plagiarism reports generated by Ouriginal will not be migrated. We aim to have the migration process finalized before the start of the new academic year.

Until October 1st, you can still use the current tool Ouriginal for plagiarism checks on theses or other assignments that are handed in by students on already running courses. The Ouriginal tool item will be removed from the navigation bar in all remaining (older) courses after this date.

Important to keep in mind:

  • Please download all plagiarism reports generated in Ouriginal that you might still need, before October 1st, 2024. After this date, they will no longer be available.
  • When preparing your Brightspace courses for the upcoming academic year (2024-2025) please make sure that you set-up the Turnitin plagiarism detection and not Ouriginal.
  • Are you already preparing your course(s) before August 1st? Then we advise you to wait with activating the plagiarism settings until Turnitin is available within Brightspace Assignments.

Support

We are currently working on updating the support pages available through Teaching Support and will have these available when Turnitin becomes available for you. In the yearly Brightspace notification on changes made to Brightspace that summer (mostly new or changes tooling) links to the support pages on Turnitin will be shared with you.

If you have any questions or concerns about the change of our plagiarism tooling, please reach out to Teaching Support
