Collaborate in Research
There are a range of opportunities to work with IDE's leading design researchers, from individual projects to strategic, long-term research initiatives. Our researchers have in-depth knowledge of the latest design methodologies and specialise in key application areas such as healthcare, mobility, sustainability, inclusivity and AI. Join EU or Dutch funded consortia or fund a PhD to dive deep into your organisation's specific challenge. By working together, we can deliver meaningful research that benefits your organisation, society and the academic field of design.

- Intellectual property (IP) is usually discussed on a project-by-project basis with the partner organisation.
- Scientific publication of the research is required, with due regard to any proprietary or confidential information.
- The topic and objectives of the research should be in line with ongoing research and support both your organisation and TU Delft's strategic objectives.
Jointly or Externally funded Research Collaboration
A jointly or externally funded research collaboration is a cooperative venture in which your organisation and TU Delft IDE make a joint contribution to a research project. Typically, this collaboration is part of a national or international funding call, such as Horizon Europe or NWO, and involves working as a partner in a larger research consortium. IDE is always looking for high quality national and international industrial partners who want to have a positive impact on society through design-led research.
- Increases the likelihood of successful funding applications as a partner of a research consortium.
- Opens up networking opportunities with other consortium members.
- Leverages shared resources and knowledge for mutually beneficial research.
PhD Research
In a PhD research collaboration, your organisation will fund a PhD candidate at the faculty of IDE for a fixed period of four years. Under the supervision and guidance of our academic staff, the PhD candidate will carry out an in-depth investigation into a challenge relevant to both your organisation and the faculty of IDE.
- Provides an in-depth exploration of a specific challenge over a period of four years.
- Allows for the development of robust, rigorous research.
- Will be executed under the guidance of two experienced academic promoters from TU Delft.
- Direct engagement with a dedicated researcher who becomes familiar with your organisation’s context and needs.
Contract Research
Contract research is a form of collaboration in which your organisation commissions IDE's research staff to carry out specific research based on your organisation's needs and objectives. It provides a tailor-made approach to investigating issues directly related to your organisation's operational, strategic or technological interests. The duration of the research will vary and will be mutually agreed upon.
- Access to academic expertise and resources.
- Tailored research that addresses your organisation's specific challenges.
- Supports your decision-making with evidence-based knowledge.
- Keeps you at the forefront of the latest methodologies, trends and technologies.
