Digital Mirrors: A Digital Artifact to Engage Public in Discourse on AI Ethics in Social Media

Mentor: Sara Colombo, sara.colombo@tudelft.nl

Problem: Users are often unaware of the use of AI on social media and its unwanted effects, which include, among others, filter bubbles, misinformation, bias and discrimination, content moderation, or user manipulation. The project addresses the challenge of fostering public awareness and dialogue on AI ethics on social media, a crucial issue in an era marked by rapid advancements in artificial intelligence.

Goal: The project aims to create an immersive digital artifact (e.g. design installation, digital campaign) that invites the public to engage in thought-provoking discussions about AI ethics on social media, encouraging critical thinking and informed decision-making.

Methods: The project will combine interactive installations/digital artifacts and mixed methods to assess the artifact’s ability to engage, foster reflection and facilitate dialogue on the ethical implications of the use of AI in social media.

Impact: The expected impact is a heightened public awareness and engagement with ethical issues surrounding AI algorithms on social media. By involving the public in these debates, the project aims to foster greater transparency, understanding, and responsibility in AI development and deployment.

Relevance: In the current digital age, where AI algorithms significantly influence content and interactions on these platforms, the project offers an engaging means to encourage ethical considerations and critical perspectives among users.
