Peer Review Showdown: Navigating the Future of Scholarly Publishing

26 September 2024 12:30 till 13:30 - Location: TU Delft Library, Prometheusplein 1, 2628 ZC Delft | Add to my calendar

Cancelled due to illness

Join us for a dynamic debate on the evolving landscape of peer review in scholarly publishing. This session brings together a commercial publisher (Sam Perkins, Executive Peer Review Manager at SAGE publishing) and a researcher (Dr.ir. Frank van der Hoeven, Director of Research at the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft and Programme Manager Open Science), to tackle pressing questions about the responsibilities and rewards of peer reviewers, especially in the context of Open Access and Open Scholarly Communication.

What to expect

In this structured debate, the publisher and researcher will engage in a lively exchange over four key statements:

  • Scholars should review articles relevant to their expertise regardless of whether the articles are published OA or not.
  • Scholars should review articles relevant to their expertise regardless of the APC costs that the journal charges.
  • Publsihers, unlike researchers themselves, are best suited to coordinate the review process (including finding the reviewers prior to publishing, coordinating the comments and their implementation before the articles are published).
  • Reviewers should always get paid for their work.

The format will include initial arguments, counter-arguments, and rebuttals from both sides, followed by a chance for the audience to vote on who made the most compelling case. The debate will be moderated, and audience interaction will be encouraged through live polling.
