Testimonial Barbara Grinn

Alumnus: Master Life Science and Technology

My name is Barbara Grinn, I am 23 years old and I started the Master Life Science and Technology at the TU Delft in 2023. Before this Master I did the Bachelor Life Science and Technology, a joint degree of TU Delft and Leiden University. After doing the bachelor, I found that I liked the technical subjects taught in the Delft courses more than the basic subjects taught in the Leiden courses. I talked to some students about their experiences with the LST masters from Leiden and Delft and found out that the LST masters in Delft would appeal to me the most.

Between the second and third year of my bachelor I took a gap year to be on the board of the LIFE student association together with five other LST students. This is an association specifically for LST students that organises social, educational and career-related activities. Overall, it has been a very enjoyable and valuable year where I have learnt a lot of new skills as well as studying.

So far, I really like the variety of courses and the freedom to choose from all the LST specialisms. Because of this variety of courses, each course can go into depth on specific topics, which I think makes this Masters very valuable. Although I would say that the study is not easy and the amount of group work can be challenging, I believe that the study is very doable and the teachers are very helpful. I have also had enough time to combine studying with social activities and hobbies such as surfing and playing guitar in a band.

During my bachelor I really wanted to do a minor abroad, but due to COVID this was not possible. However, it is possible to do an elective abroad for one semester in this Master's programme. So I am going to Lisbon for a semester to take advantage of this opportunity to gain some experience abroad before I finish my degree. Luckily, it also gives me more time to think about what I want to do after my Master's, because I am not sure yet. But what I do know is that I am really fascinated by the range of (sustainability) applications of biotechnology and that this Masters will certainly give me all the tools I need to work in this field!
