Integration of phononic metamaterials in aircraft structures

The aviation industry aims to enhance passenger comfort and safety by reducing noise in aircraft cabins. Traditional soundproofing methods conflict with the goal of lightweight, fuel-efficient aircraft. This thesis explores using Helmholtz resonator-based metamaterials in lightweight composite acoustic panels. Findings show that face sheet lay-up and non-resonant volumes significantly impact sound absorption and resonator interference. The study concludes that incorporating these metamaterials can achieve effective, lightweight acoustic panels for aircraft cabins and proposes a design concept.
