The Red Baron visits IDE: Exploring the role of designers in OEMs
On 20 November, a bright red DAF XG truck was parked in front of our faculty – you couldn’t have missed it! The reason? The truck was there to provide extra inspiration for the students attending the “Understanding Organizations – the OEM” lecture that afternoon. Chief designer at DAF Trucks and IDE alumnus Bart van Lotringen was a guest speaker at the special event, which was organised by Erik Tempelman and Bart Bluemink.
The lecture explored the various roles that a designer can play in a large OEM (original equipment manufacturer). It covered the importance of interdisciplinary teamwork, connecting with key “drivers” within the organisation, and the perseverance required for success – all while emphasising the significance of organisational insight
Erik Tempelman, drawing from his experience as a materials innovator at DAF, illustrated these points (and more) with his usual enthusiasm, while Bart Bluemink skilfully connected the discussion to course theory.
Participating remotely, Bart van Lotringen dived into the design process behind the award-winning XG truck, highlighting the role of rules and regulations in shaping design. He praised the analytical qualities of Delft designers and stressed that empathy and form-giving are equally critical for successful design outcomes.
Meanwhile, the DAF XG itself, nicknamed “The Red Baron”, captured the attention of students during the breaks. Its spacious, luxurious interior made a strong impression, while its striking exterior also offered plenty to admire. The faculty expresses its thanks to Hein van der Sar of BLOM-DSW for his contribution to the exciting afternoon. It’s certainly a lecture students will remember for years to come.
