Jelt Cup Cleaning Station pilot at TU Delft
IDE students have once again shown that taking initiative can be key in creating a better designed environment. Since 2024, tea and coffee drinkers on campus have been required to use reusable cups. Upon finding that 65% of students experience difficulty in keeping their cups clean, a group of IDE students designed the Jelt Cup Cleaning Station. And now, TU Delft has agreed to do a pilot run of their stations on campus. You can test them out for yourself from 22 April to 3 May in the Aula, BK, and library
The transition from disposable cups to reusable cups
Since the beginning of 2024, TU Delft has stepped away from disposable cups, turning towards reusable ones in order to cup back on plastic waste. To encourage the tea and coffee drinkers across campus, the university has set up a system that include deposit cups (if people don’t feel like bringing their own mugs from home).
But while this is a step in the right direction, the IDE students behind the Jelt Cup Cleaning Station found that 65% of students experience difficulty in keeping their reusable cups clean. The results were the difficult, unhygienic, and non-circular use of TU Delft’s reusable deposit cups. Once example being, people discarding them instead of cleaning them. Additionally, the students found that the deposit cups also create extra work for TU Delft’s catering staff and baristas, many of whom have to facilitate and clean them.
Jelt Cup Cleaning Station
This is where the Jelt Cup Cleaning System comes in. With it, you can rinse and dry a reusable cup within 10 seconds. After using the station, you get to walk away with a clean cup that be stored in your bag or be ready for another beverage. The stations allow students, employees, and visitors to enjoy coffee or tea in a sustainable way without the hassle of a dirty cup or burdening the catering staff.
The Pilot
You can test out one of the Jelt Cup Cleaning Station prototypes on campus between 22 April to 3 May (9:00 – 18:00). Stations will be in the Library (BG living room), Bouwkunde (BG west and 2nd floor west), and the Aula (1st floor near lecture halls B/D). After trying out the station, you can leave your feedback on the whiteboards located in each location.
The Team
The team behind the project is comprised of six IDE master’s students: Joep Dortmans (product design), Eline Oei (marketing and outreach), Yoran Zonneveld (product development), Tessa Bruins Slot (finance and outreach), Beau Dessens (product development), and Lindy Kok (user experience).
