IDE bachelor: alumni wanted!
As IDE alumni you are experts in what it’s like to design for the real world. We want to bring your perspective into the renewed bachelor programme, shrinking the gap between education theory and design in practice. Interested in getting involved?
As the faculty gears up for the renewed bachelor programme this August, a number of lecturers are looking for IDE alumni to play a valuable role in the curriculum.
Design Challenges for Diving into Design
Semester-long design projects, in which students are challenged to design for real-world scenarios will form the backbone of the new bachelor. The first design project - aptly named Diving into Design - is led by course coordinator, Silje Dehli. She explains that with a focus on experience, learning by doing and thinking, “students will delve into the six main competencies of designing – navigating, integrating, framing, concepting, visualising/prototyping and evaluating. They will explore these competencies through four micro projects, tackling different types of design challenges varying in openness. It won’t be about the results but about the process, sharing experiences, reflecting, and growing awareness of what is to come.”
Silje is looking for alumni that want to interact with students in the micro project by means of a short guest-lecture and Q&A.
ID(M)E: Help bachelor students find their role in design
ID(M)E is a learning line and a set of dedicated activities about self-discovery and development, guiding students towards becoming a reflective and autonomous design professional. It encourages exploration, reflection and purposeful navigation through the bachelor programme. Lecturer and Education Fellow, Sjoerd van Dommelen explains: “I see ID(M)E as an opportunity to look at yourself, the curriculum and the world from the point of view of a third person.’’
Can you help students gain this third person perspective? Sjoerd is seeking alumni of any age, working in any field to get involved - the more diverse the better (design dropouts are welcome too!). You will need to be willing to share your own experience and act as sounding boards for students. Concretely this will mean giving around half a day of your time (probably at the end of the first semester) in which you will be interviewed by multiple IDE students.
How to get involved
Are you interested in helping with either Diving into Design or ID(M)E? Please introduce yourself to Silje or Sjoerd, explaining a bit about your experience and the sort of design challenges you work with. You can do this by emailing alumni-io@tudelft.nl by Wednesday 26 May.
