IDE in the spotlight with lighting design awards
Lighting Design Awards (LIT) and [d]arc awards go to IDE alumnus, Wim aan de Stegge and PhD candidate Cehao Yu.
Biophillic Light Design
A biophilic light created by an IDE student has been singled out for an International Lighting Design Award. The light, the result of Wim aan de Stegge’s graduation project with Beersnielsen Lighting Designers (Rotterdam) can be seen at the Parc Pavilion 'De Hoge Veluwe' in Otterlo, the Netherlands. Wim’s exterior and interior lighting design plays on the relationship with nature and the close connection with the surrounding forest. The design strives to introduce the natural light and shadows of the forest into the building itself. Shadows representing a gentle breeze blowing through the tree is simulated by dynamically varying light and shadow from nine chandeliers, supported by bird songs that echo in the space.
The design is an example of biophilic design, which reinforces contact between people and nature by incorporating elements of nature into the built environment. A total of seven prototypes were produced in order to optimise the dynamically changing shadows and to create a shape that feels natural in the space. Each chandelier consists of twenty individually controllable LEDs. Video footage of light and shadows was used to create an algorithm that controls each of these light fixtures, creating a natural feeling of movement. Come and visit De Hoge Veluwe for yourself and find the hidden squirrel in the tree!
The project was completed with the support of Sjoerd van Beers and Juliette Nielsen of Beersnielsen. Sjoerd was Wim’s company advisor and regularly lectures and coaches at IDE and Architecture (for instance in the elective Lighting Design) at TU Delft.

Quadrant Arcade
IDE PhD candidate Cehao Yu, who formerly worked at AECOM, also received a LIT and [d]arc award for his design for the Quadrant Arcade.
AECOM Lighting Design, in collaboration with architect Barr Gazetas and The Crown Estate, have transformed the Grade II listed Quadrant Arcade, Regent Street, into an elegant new retail destination for the West End. Regent Street’s only arcade is revitalised through arranging the right light in the right place, whilst maintaining and emphasising its unique historic character to create an outstanding retail space and public realm experience by day or night.
