Sander ten Caat
Sander started in September 2022 as a PhD researcher working on justice in the Dutch energy transition. In obtaining his BA and MA in History, Sander discovered an interest in people’s experiences of having to adapt to unfamiliar or changing climates in the past. He decided to use this interest for present and future, to help create a more fair response to current-day climate change. For his MSc in Governance of Sustainability, he therefore focused on addressing experienced and hidden injustices in the energy transition.
Upon graduating, he started his PhD at the Institute of Public Administration at Leiden University. His research is part of the NWO project JustETrans (Co-creating just and effective energy transitions: participatory modelling with citizens and stakeholders). This interdisciplinary project aims at developing modelling tools and a participatory multi-modelling method that allow for the further inclusion of stakeholders’ justice perspectives in decision-making for energy projects, by including these perspectives in energy system models. Within this project, Sander studies stakeholders’ conceptualisations of justice, to see how these influence or are affected by the energy transition, and to find ways of formalising these conceptualisations for use in energy system models.
In his free time, Sander likes playing korfball and being active outdoors, like running or going for a walk.
