The UM-SJTU Joint Institute (JI) was jointly established by Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the University of Michigan in 2006. It is located in Shanghai, China. The goal of this partnership is to build a world-class teaching and research institute in China, nurturing innovative leaders with global visions. The Joint Institute upholds a unique educational philosophy of “Internationalization, Interdisciplinarity, Innovation, Quality”.  Over the past decade, JI has built a world-class institution in China and created a widely-emulated set of development models by fusing Chinese and western educational philosophies and characteristics. 

Tsinghua University was established in 1911, originally under the name “Tsinghua Xuetang”. The school was renamed "Tsinghua School" in 1912. The university section was founded in 1925. The name “National Tsinghua University” was adopted in 1928. The faculty greatly valued the interaction between Chinese and Western cultures, the sciences and humanities, the ancient and modern.With the motto of “Self-Discipline and Social Commitment” and the spirit of “Actions Speak Louder than Words”, Tsinghua University is dedicated to the well-being of Chinese society and to world development.
