2.2 Specialisation D - Design: Transport Systems and Networks
About
This specialisation focuses on transport service and infrastructure network design in the context of urban design, spatial planning and regional economy. It teaches students how to design efficient multi-modal transport networks (links, nodes, hubs, interfaces, hierarchy, etc.) under spatial and policy constraints.
Topics that are dealt with are:
- the transport service network in space and time (i.e. network and schedule);
- use of modelling techniques to analyse multi-modal transport networks;
- the strengths and weaknesses of the transport modes;
- how to guarantee an efficient operation of transport services.
This specialisation starts with a quantitative (modelling) approach of transport networks. Furthermore, special attention is given to air transport and public (rail) transport systems. The final task is a multi-modal infrastructure design task in which road, rail and air transport are combined.
