IDAHOBIT (International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia)

Every year, May 17th is IDAHOBIT. IDAHOBIT stands for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia. Its puprose is to raise awareness about the discrimination and prejudice faced by lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTIQ+) individuals around the world.

Homophobia, biphobia, intersexism and transphobia refer to negative attitudes, beliefs, and actions towards people who are homosexual, bi-sexual, non-binary or transgender. These attitudes can lead to discrimination, harassment, and violence against LGBTIQ+ individuals. And they can also create a hostile environment where people feel excluded, judged, or unable to express their true selves. It is very important to speak up against this, both on the TU Delft campus, as well as anywhere where you may encouter such attitutes. Only then we can start creating a safe environment for all.

Speaking up against homophobia and transphobia is essential for several reasons:

  1. Equality and Human Rights: Every individual deserves to be treated with respect, dignity, and equality, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, or expression. By speaking up against homophobia and transphobia, we support the fundamental human rights of LGBTIQ+ individuals and work towards a more inclusive society.
  2. Awareness and Education: Speaking out helps raise awareness about the challenges faced by the LGBTIQ+ community. It helps educate others about the harmful effects of discrimination and encourages empathy, understanding, and acceptance.
  3. Support and Solidarity: Speaking up sends a powerful message of support and solidarity to LGBTIQ+ individuals who may be struggling with their identity or facing discrimination. It lets them know that they are not alone and that there are people who will stand up for their rights. The power of this cannot be overestimated.
  4. Combating Stereotypes and Prejudice: By challenging homophobia and transphobia, we can break down stereotypes and misconceptions that fuel discrimination. This can help create a more inclusive and diverse society where people are valued for who they are rather than judged based on their sexual orientation or gender identity.
  5.  Creating Change: Speaking up against homophobia and transphobia can lead to positive change at different levels, including within families, communities, institutions, and governments. It can encourage the implementation of laws, policies, and practices that protect the rights and well-being of LGBTIQ+ individuals.

Overall, it is important to speak up against homophobia, biphobia and transphobia to promote equality, foster understanding, and create a world where everyone can live authentically and without fear of discrimination or violence.

Therefore, please be an ally to the LGBTIQ+ community and speak up if you encounter homophobia, biphobia, intersexism, transphobia, or any other LGBTIQ+ related discrimibation on the campus of TU Delft or anywhere else. Many thanks in advance.
