The topic of mobility is so vast that it plays a role in virtually every aspect of our lives. The book ‘Mobility | Society - Society Seen through the Lens of Mobilities’ is packed with ideas, suggestions, contemplations about the potential that mobility has in shaping the future of society.
The potential of mobility
The book brings together experts from diverse disciplines. It is a journey through the flows of goods, people, materials, ideas and assets, from designing vehicles with new energy, to highlighting biases of mobility justice, the relationship between speed and privilege, and much more.
IDE Dean Caspar Chorus: “This book breaks new ground by reconceptualizing and reframing the topic and by stretching the concepts of mobility, society, and their interaction to their respective limits. Why would mobility-society interactions exclude flows of ideas, of migration, of money? Of energy and food? This book uses the power of metaphors to create a narrative that will last and that will inspire legions of students, scholars and practitioners to think and to act, create, and design.”

“As the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft, we are proud to have initiated this book. Our mobility- and design-researchers know all about the more established model- and data-driven efforts to understand and shape mobility, but they also have a feeling for conceptual creativity and the effective use of well-placed metaphors. Together, these paradigms position us - and the readers of this book – uniquely to rethink and address society's most pressing mobility problems.”
The book is curated by Matthijs van Dijk and Lowie Vermeersch, it is published with Lars Müller and has essays by Wouter Haspeslagh, Elmer van Grondelle, Kader Abdolah, Peter Adey, Adrian Bejan, Rawad Choubassi, Tim Cresswell, Femke de Boer, Annelien De Dijn, Livia Del Conte, Vincent Kaufmann, Euiyoung Kim, Nicole van Nes, Emily Molnar, Lowie Vermeersch, Matthijs van Dijk, Costanza Milano, and more.
The book will be presented at Dutch Design Week in Eindhoven on 23 October 2023.
