Since 1998 Delft University of Technology started a collaboration with universities, researchers and students in Vietnam. Being well known for its beautiful delta areas (the Red River delta and the Mekong delta), research has focussed mainly on the fields of hydraulic engineering, coastal systems and water management. Delft University of Technology, also located in a delta region, has a great deal of knowledge and expertise in the field of water, that they are happy to share. The long-standing relationship between the Dutch and Vietnamese universities has resulted in exchange of knowledge and many inspiring developments and projects so far.
Sharing knowledge starts with increasing the accessibility of existing information. To make it easier to find relevant reports and documents about previous and ongoing research projects in Vietnam, this website gives access to several links and different platforms. Student Project Updates
Research
The collaboration between Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) and Thuyloi University (TLU), started back in 1998, when the first Memorandum of Understanding was signed. With the support of the Dutch government, TU Delft played an important role in capacity building at the coastal engineering education at TLU. Curriculum development was one of the focus points in the capacity building project. Several MSc students and PhD candidates followed courses or studied in Delft, to return to Vietnam some years later with new knowledge and ambitions to strengthen the team of lecturers and professors at TLU.
In 2012, the financial support from the Dutch government stopped, as the Vietnamese economy had grown consistently over the previous years, but the relationship between the universities stayed in place. Both universities decided to create an environment that would facilitate the exchange of students and scientists to work together on research and educational projects. In 2012, the collaboration was broadened due to the involvement of the Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment (HUNRE). At HUNRE, a new bachelor program was developed specifically on Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM).
Recently, after some successful years, the number of Vietnamese students choosing to study in the field of water are dropping. This, in combination with the effects of climate change, ask for a new program. Therefore the "Climate Proof Vietnam" program was launched in 2019 as part of the Orange Knowledge Program of Nuffic.
Universities
Since 1998 Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) is active in Vietnam on many water related researches and projects. They started a collaboration with Thuyloi University (TLU) and Hanoi University of Natural Resources and Environment (HUNRE). Together with experts from ITC Twente they worked on the institutional strengthening of the Vietnamese partners.
During the execution of several projects there has been close contact between professors, students and researchers from both TU Delft, TLU, HUNRE and ITC Twente. The TU Delft believes that capacity building, sharing of knowledge and adaptation to climate change are very valuable topics and this collaboration makes it possible to improve on all of these.
Since the start of the collaboration between the TU Delft, Thuyloi and HUNRE, an increasing number of projects and research has been executed. Some projects had the focus on education and capacity building, where other projects focussed on in-depth science and technology in the field of hydraulic engineering and water management.
