Some PDEs admit symmetric ‘pattern’ solutions, such as travelling or rotating waves. We investigate what happens to such patterns when noise is present in the system. We show that the patterns persist for a long time with high probability, and describe the (noise-induced) motion of the pattern. The symmetries of the PDE and the pattern play a key role in describing the dynamics, and we give special attention to the situation where the symmetry group is not commutative.
