Modular approaches to modeling complex systems have a fundamental place in engineering and industry. In this presentation, I will present the port-Hamiltonian approach and its modular nature for modeling multiphysics problems. This approach will be applied to acoustic, electromagnetic and elastic waves. The examples are linked by the unifying framework of exterior calculus and Hilbert complexes. A discretization preserving the port-Hamiltonian structure based on conforming and hybrid finite elements will be presented for Maxwell's equations.
