Open Access Funding

There are many options for TU Delft employees to finance Open Access publications. Various procedures have been drawn up for books and articles in scientific journals. Check the options by choosing books or articles below.

Articles for scientific journals

There are many funding opportunities for TU Delft staff to publish in Open Access journals. Funding is done by paying the publisher a so-called article processing charge (APC). TU Delft can pay or (partially) reimburse these for TU Delft authors in many cases. Publishing articles in open access is an obligation for TU Delft authors. The basic principle here is to place at least the final author's version (authors accepted manuscript) in TU Delft Repository. This is in line with TU Delft's policy for open access publications.

Check funding opportunities by using the following steps:

  • Check the national agreements and bilateral agreements with publishers entered into by TU Delft Library on behalf of TU Delft. These agreements allow Delft scholars to publish open access at no cost of their own. You will find all the information about these agreements at title level in the Journal Browser. After approval, TU Delft will bear (part of) the costs for the open access publication.
  • If there is no agreement check whether you can pay the APC costs with funding for your project from the European programme Horizon Europe (2021-2027) or the Dutch funder NWO. Open access publishing is an obligation if you have received a grant from them.

Is funding based on the above information not an option? Then you can apply to the TU Delft Open Access Fund, which has existed since 2008.

TU Delft Open Access Fund

TU Delft authors can apply for funding for open access journals if a number of conditions are met:

  1. The corresponding article author must have a demonstrable working relationship with TU Delft and publish the relevant publication under TU Delft's name. If the requesting author is no longer employed by TU Delft, the principle is that the name TU Delft is still mentioned on the article as the affiliation of the author(s).
  2. Students, co-authors and former employees cannot benefit from the Open Access Fund.
  3. The author has already checked the open access possibilities in the TU Delft Journal Browser.
  4. The contribution only applies to articles published in Open Access journals registered in the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ). Is the journal not in this list? Contact OAdeals-lib@tudelft.nl to discuss possible exceptions.
  5. Open access articles in so-called hybrid journals are not eligible for funding. Hybrid journals are journals that use a subscription model in which loose open access articles can also be placed if an APC has been paid for them.
  6. From 1 February 2024, the contribution from the open access fund for articles shall not exceed €2,350 per article and shall be indexed annually. Additional costs will be borne by the applicant.
  7. Sponsored articles must be published with a Creative Commons licence, preferably a CC-BY licence. This is in line with TU Delft's open access policy (effective 01-02-2024).
  8. Based on these principles, the fund managers determine whether your request is eligible for a contribution from the Open Access Fund. To avoid disappointment afterwards, please check in advance whether your publication is eligible for a contribution from the fund.

Please use the application form for a contribution from the Open Access Fund.

NB. In addition to the costs of making the publication open access, there may be additional costs that a publisher charges when publishing a scientific article.

  • Colour costs; some journals charge for publishing a scientific figure or image in colour. For the latest colour costs, read the guidelines (submission guidelines) of the specific journal.
  • Page charges; some journals charge for publishing more pages than the standard number of pages. For the latest page charges, read the guidelines (submission guidelines) of the specific journal.
  • Copyright Permission; fee you may have to pay for the reuse of scientific figures and images by purchasing those to the rights holder of the image(s).

These costs are NOT reimbursed by the TU Delft Open Access Fund.

Books

There are funding opportunities for TU Delft staff to publish Open Access books. Funding for this is done by paying the publisher a so-called Book Processing Charge (BPC). TU Delft Open Access Fund can co-finance this in many cases.

Check the funding possibilities by using the following steps

  • Check whether you can pay the BPC costs with funding for your project from the European Horizon Europe programme (2021-2027) or the Dutch financier NWO. Open access publishing of books is often an obligation if you have received a grant from them.
  • Is funding based on the above information not an option? Then you can apply to the TU Delft Open Access Fund, which has existed since 2008.

TU Delft Open Access Fund

TU Delft authors can apply for funding for open access books if a number of conditions are met:

  1. The author and/or editor of the book must have a demonstrable working relationship with TU Delft and publish the publication in question (partly) under TU Delft's name. If the requesting author is no longer employed by TU Delft, the starting point is that the name TU Delft is mentioned in the colophon of the book as the affiliation of the author/editor because he or she did the work in TU Delft employment.
  2. Students and former employees cannot benefit from the Open Access Fund.
  3. The contribution applies only to books published in the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB). Exceptions to this are negotiable. Is the book publisher is not indexed in this list? Contact OAdeals-lib@tudelft.nl to discuss possible exceptions.
  4. From 1 February 2024, the open access fund contribution for books will be a maximum of €5,400 per book and will be indexed annually.
  5. When applying for a contribution for an open access book, the (preliminary) contract with a publisher should always be sent along for assessment by the fund managers.
  6. The starting point of the funding is that the open access costs for multiple authors/editors from different institutions will be divided as equally as possible between those institutions. The applicant should take an active role in this and submit these proposals to the authors/editors at the other institutions. The TU Delft Open Access Fund has only an advisory role in this.
  7. The sponsored books must be published with a Creative Commons licence, preferably a CC-BY licence, in line with the TU Delft open access policy.
  8. The name TU Delft should be included as (co-)funder in the colophon of the book in the following way: The open access edition of this book was financed by the TU Delft Open Access Fund. A TU Delft logo must also be included.
  9. On the basis of the above information, the fund managers will decide whether your request is eligible for a contribution from the Open Access Fund. To avoid disappointment afterwards, please check in advance whether your publication is eligible for a contribution from the fund.

TU Delft OPEN Publishing

Authors who publish their book with TU Delft Open Publishing, TU Delft's open access publisher, are not eligible for funding from the TU Delft Open Access Fund. If costs are incurred in the production of these books, they can be reported to the TU Delft OPEN Publishing staff. Each request will be dealt with in detail. Possible costs for these books will be for the account of TU Delft OPEN Publishing.

Book chapters

Book chapters are not eligible for a contribution from the Open Access Fund. Book chapters are placed in TU Delft Repository after an embargo period of 6 months without charge as a result of the policy for Short Scientific Work at TU Delft.
