Our History

Delft University Press (DUP) was the first publisher to take up TU Delft publications. This publishing house existed for 33 years. Delft University Press (DUP) was founded in 1972 and was recognized as a scientific publisher four years later. DUP published more than 1,300 books, public lectures, conference papers, reports, theses and scientific journals for many years. DUP Science was a used imprint of Delft University Press. Almost all these publications can be found in TU Delft Repository. The publishing house was sold to IOS Press, based in Amsterdam, in 2005.

Several years later a new publishing initiative took place at TU Delft. TU Delft publications were now published under an open licence, operating with the Open Journal Software (OJS) of the Public Knowledge Project (PKP). This activity was part of TU Delft's prominent role as a supporter of open access in publishing. An open access publishing platform was established in 2011 within the Faculty of Architecture. The following years journals, dissertations, lectures, conference proceedings and monographs were published under the label BK Books.

TU Delft OPEN Publishing

In 2019, publishing activities were gradually taken over by TU Delft OPEN Publishing, part of TU Delft Library. TU Delft OPEN Publishing follows a diamond open access model where there are no costs for authors and editors and no costs for readers. At the end of 2022, BK Books ceased all publishing activities.

Next to research publications, TU Delft OPEN Publishing is the publishing partner of textbooks (2018) and Education series (2023).

From 2023, TU Books and journals published in co-creation with other publishers such as IOS Press, nai010 and Jap SAM Books.

By 2024, TU Delft has published more than 100 books and manages a portfolio of 19 scientific journals.
