The Police ICAI lab is a collaboration between the Dutch Police, University of Utrecht, University of Amsterdam and TU Delft. In this lab the police and researchers explore how the Police in the execution of their work can be supported by AI technologies. The lab aims to develop these technologies in such a way that they help to further improve the safety of the Netherlands in a social, legal and ethical way.
The Delft contribution focusses on three diverse applications of AI. The first research line focusses on anonymization of speech and the use of speech recognition software by the Police in different scenarios, e.g., to reduce the work load of transcribing interviews into text, note taking, and entering information into registration systems, and real-time analysis of incoming speech. The second research line focusses on the control of teams of micro aerial vehicles for search operations, developing algorithms that automatically coordinate their movement and thus reduce the workload of officers in the field. The third research line focusses on using simulation and optimisation models in situations that ask for immediate action but require the processing of huge amounts of data. For instance, to predict after an incident in which direction the perpetrators have fled to initiate pursuit in the right direction. 
What is unique for all these research lines is that the technology or prototypes are developed to support the decision-making process. With more specific and publicly available data , it becomes essential for the Police to have methods and tools to use and process this data. However, there is always an officer that makes a decision for a course of action, hence, the focus on decision-support.

The research that is being done in this ICAI lab builds on the body of knowledge that is already available within TU Delft. On the one hand the researchers hope to extend and strengthen the collaboration within the Police AI lab. On the other hand, the researchers are looking to set up other projects that build on this AI research but in a different setting.
