Profile

Jan Carel Diehl is a full professor in Design for Inclusive Sustainable Healthcare at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering at the Delft University of Technology as well a Medical Delta Professor at the Erasmus Medical Center. He has over 30 years’ experience in Design for Sustainability both in academic and industrial context. This resulted in amongst others two Design for Sustainability Manuals for the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and three Sustainable Product Service System Books which have been translated into multiple languages and have been used in hundreds of universities and companies worldwide. He is the Co-Lead of the 6 million Euro ESCH-R project (Evidence-based Strategies to create Circular Hospitals), Co-Lead of the Transition towards Zero Emission Endoscopy (ZEE) project, and the Erasmus+ DESHEALTH project (DESHEALTH - A Systemic Design approach to education and training on Sustainable Healthcare). Within these projects environmental assessments (LCA, MFA, and Product Journey), hotspot identification and developing Circular Interventions within healthcare systems are the center point of the research activities. He has published over 250 academic articles, supervised over 300 MSc graduation students, successfully finalized 9 PhDs, joined over 16 PhD defenses as external examiner and has been a winner of a range of Design for Sustainability Awards.
