On 6 December, Teun van den Ende gives the lecture 'On Vers Beton and the Architecture Yearbook' as part of The Berlage Sessions.

On Vers Beton and the Architecture Yearbook

Teun van den Ende will speak about his involvement in two distinct publications: Vers Beton, a Rotterdam-based online journalistic platform and magazine dedicated to independent journalism about the city of Rotterdam, and Architecture in the Netherlands, an annual publication that has served as an essential survey of Dutch architecture since 1988.

Vers Beton offers comprehensive coverage of Rotterdam's urban life, including politics, architecture, society, arts, and culture. The platform engages with its audience through innovative formats, such as the online game "Bouwen is Macht" [Building is Power], which explored urban development interactively. Vers Beton also organizes events like "Into the Woods," promoting urban biodiversity initiatives.

Architecture in the Netherlands, published annually by nai010 Publishers since over thirty-five years, provides a curated overview of significant architectural projects and developments in the country. The yearbook features essays reflecting on the past year's architectural trends and a selection of notable projects, typically around 28, chosen by a three-member editorial team.

Van den Ende's involvement in both publications highlights the interconnectedness of journalism, urban development, and architecture in the Netherlands. His work contributes to a broader understanding of how cities evolve, bridging the gap between public discourse on urban issues and professional architectural practice. This dual perspective enriches the dialogue on Dutch architecture and urban planning, offering insights into both local urban dynamics and national architectural trends.

About the Berlage Sessions

The Berlage Sessions is a thematic seven-part seminar series focusing on scholarly research and critical approaches to the history and theory of architecture and urban design. This autumn's series, entitled "Post, Publish, or Perish‽" is exploring how architects engage with various publication forms to disseminate their ideas, promote theirs and others work, engage with broader societal design questions, and influence and establish discourse.
