Herman Hertzberger
Architect and founder of AHH

Herman Hertzberger is a Dutch architect, famous for his architectural and theoretical contributions to structuralism in the 1960s and 1970s. His internationally acclaimed works include a Montessori School in Delft (1960-66), the Diagoon housing complex in Delft (1971), and the Centraal Beheer Insurance Company building in Apeldoorn (1970-72). His published works include ‘Lessons for Students in Architecture’ (1991), which is the namesake for this edition of BK Talks.

Dick van Gameren
Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment, TU Delft

Dick van Gameren has been the dean of the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment since April 2019. He has also been Professor of Dwelling at the faculty since 2006, managing an international teaching and research network aimed at tackling the problem of affordable housing in rapidly expanding cities in Asia and Africa. In 2013 became a partner with Mecanoo Architecten in Delft. His numerous architectural projects include the Dutch Embassy in Ethiopia, which won the prestigious Aga Khan Award in 2007, and the Langebrug student housing project in Leiden, which won the Rijnlandse Architectuurprijs in 2017.

Carola Hein
Professor and Chair, History of Architecture and Urban Planning, TU Delft

Carola Hein is Professor and Chair, History of Architecture and Urban Planning at Delft University of Technology, Professor at Leiden and Erasmus University, UNESCO Chair Water, Ports and Historic Cities. She has published widely in the field of architectural, urban and planning history and has tied historical analysis to contemporary development.

Winy Maas
Co-founder and principal architect at MVRDV

Winy Maas is an architect and urban designer and one of the co-founding directors MVRDV, based in Rotterdam, known for projects such as the Expo 2000 pavilion, Grand Paris Plus Petit, the Market Hall in Rotterdam, the Crystal Houses in Amsterdam and the Seoullo7017 Skygarden in Seoul. He is also founder and director of The Why Factory, a research institute for the future city at TU Delft. He has been Visiting Professor at GSAPP Columbia and IIT Chicago and has held teaching positions at various universities and institutes worldwide. With both MVRDV and The Why Factory he has published a series of research projects.

Suzanne Mulder
Curator of collections at Het Nieuwe Instituut

Suzanne Mulder is architectural historian and works as curator of collections at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam. She researches and acquires architecture archives for the State Archive of Dutch Architecture and Urban Planning, such as the archive of Herman Hertzberger. She curates exhibitions such as recently the exhibition MVRDVHNI, The Living Archive of a Studio.

Liesbeth van der Pol
Founding Partner at Dok Architecten Ltd

Liesbeth van der Pol is the founder and partner of Dok Architecten Ltd in Amsterdam, known for its innovative transformation of the 17th century Dutch The National Maritime Museum and many other projects. She is also Director of the Royal Holland Society of Science and Humanities and a board member of various committees - the Hendrick de Keyser Historic Houses Association, Foundation Fortress Island Pampus, Europan Nederland and Recommendation of Europa Nostra. Her prior experience also includes her role as a Chief Government Architect and the Head of the Man & Public Space department at the Design Academy Eindhoven. 

Izak Salomons
Architect and author

Izak Salomons (1938), Amsterdam architect, was a teacher of architectural design at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment at TU Delft. He worked with Jaap Bakema and Herman Hertzberger, wrote about architecture for Amsterdam Daily Het Parool, and was also editor of B-nieuws and Forum. He and Cootje Salomons did social housing projects and several synagogue renovations. He also edited ‘Built with Colour’ about Van Eyck’s General Audit In The Hague. 

Johannes Schwartz
Architectural photographer

Johannes Schwartz studied photography at Gerrit Rietveld Academy, Amsterdam. From 2004-2011 he has been head of the photography department of the Rietveld Academy where he is currently still teaching. Among others Schwartz initiated an ongoing succession of publications in collaboration with graphic designers Experimental Jetset. The series started in 2003 published on the occasion of a group exhibition that took place at Centraal Museum, Utrecht. Schwartz was one of the participating artists in 'Opera Aperta / Loose Work', the official Dutch entry to the Venice Biennale in 2011.
