Chemical Engineering

Hello, my name is Jai Singh and I am from India. My decision to study Chemical Engineering stems from my desire to create breakthrough solutions that will have a direct impact on society. TU Delft has a strong focus on sustainability, not only in teaching but also in creating impactful solutions for industries around the world. This can also be seen in the Master's curriculum, which focuses on advanced courses such as 'AL in the Chemical Industry' or 'Catalysis for Circularity'. Therefore, I chose to gain advanced knowledge in Chemical Engineering at TU Delft and be part of this global energy transition.

TU Delft has a strong global reputation for educating students and building the society. The Department of Chemical Engineering has a significant global impact due to its excellent courses, such as Advanced Transport Phenomena, and its state-of-the-art research infrastructure which includes a nuclear reactor. Moreover, the department's close ties with world-leading energy companies in the port of Rotterdam provide valuable research input and recruitment opportunities. These factors motivated me to pursue my chemical engineering studies at TU Delft.

Personally, I liked the fact that all the courses were application-oriented and some included industry-related projects. All the professors are enthusiastic about their course and provide us with many real-life examples to teach us.
I believe that TU Delft has provided me with the technical knowledge, soft skills and global network of chemical engineers to become a leader in the transition to a more sustainable chemical industry.

I conducted research on the electrochemical conversion of CO2 under the supervision of Dr Tom Burdyny. This project deepened my understanding of complex electrolysis principles and provided invaluable hands-on laboratory experience. It was a great collaboration with different researchers where I honed my research skills and even presented my findings at a conference, with a publication forthcoming.

I think the quarter system (10 weeks) of education was a bit difficult for me coming from India where we have a semester system. However, learning effective time management and discipline helped me survive this form of education.

Further, In my professional journey, I would like to join the process industry and help them in their energy transition journey towards net zero emission goals, using the knowledge I have gained during my Masters at TU Delft.
