Research themes & flagships

Creating a climate resilient society cannot be achieved without innovative technologies that both help to mitigate climate change and to adapt our living environment to the consequences of global warming. It cannot be achieved without a better understanding of global and regional climate change. And it cannot be achieved without deeper insights into the ethical, social and cultural boundary conditions, designs and effects. As such, our Climate Action Programme focuses on four overarching themes - Climate Science, Climate Change Mitigation, Climate Change Adaptation and Climate Change Governance.

Our Climate Action Programme builds upon decades of university wide climate action research and is focused on expanding our climate action impact in the Netherlands and beyond, especially through the establishment of 17 new Flagships. These Flagships include multidisciplinary teams and are guided by a holistic and interdisciplinary approach to address the complex and urgent problem of climate change. Over time additional flagship projects may be added to the research programme.
Four theme leads help to coordinate activities under their theme and the associated Flagships.
