Urbanism

Since 2010, Prof. Dick van Gameren, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture & the Built Environment, along with the support of members of the Chair of Dwelling, has been initiating collaborations with several Indian universities, not-for-profit organizations as well as private practitioners. This has led to various forms of engagement: from exchange programs and Master-level design studios to inviting visiting professors such as PK Das who also delivered the 2019 Delft Global Talk.

Our most long-standing partner in this respect has been the KRVIA school of Architecture (University of Mumbai) with whom we initiated a three-year-long exchange programs that sees students from both countries work together on affordable housing design. TU Delft staff have collaborated with KRVIA on the so-called ‘Bridge Studio’ – a semester-long studio that challenged students from Mumbai to develop designs for sites in both Mumbai and Amsterdam. There have been joint design studios in Ahmedabad (CEPT) and Chandigarh (Chandigarh College of Architecture). India collaborators have also been essential to TU Delft’s MOOC on global housing design.

With collaborators at the Charles Correa Foundation in Goa, researchers have realized various projects– from travelling exhibitions, conferences and workshops to even the publication of a book of the Indian architect Charles Correa. The project Strengthening problem-based learning in South Asian Universities also brings together TU Delft, European and Indian partners.
