Climate & Energy
The Negative Emissions Program at TU Delft (currently in its developmental phases) is a unique program towards mitigating climate change. TU Delft leads large international Climate Smart Coffee Plantation Consortium with support from NL Works and multiple partners from the Netherlands and India (Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, mByom, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Institute of Forest Genetics and Tree Breeding, the Government College of Engineering Kannur). It aims to connect academia, industry, government, and local communities for the holistic development of carbon neutral coffee farms in Wayanad, India, while sustainably increasing the income of the farmers, and achieving food security.
The Climate Smart Coffee Consortium visited Wayanad in April, 2022 to support the transition to a carbon-negative society, starting with Climate Smart Coffee Argo-Forestry. The Consortium’s action plan focuses on better coffee and better customers, in which farmers and coffee processors are properly trained and where we develop the international coffee market, creating sustainable coffee, with sustainable prices. As a result, it will provide sustainable income for smallholder farmers, making sure the farmer is in charge.
