The stochastic thin film equation is a degenerate 4-th order SPDE arising in fluid dynamics with a conservative, possibly nonlinear noise term. We introduce this equation, motivate its mathematical analysis and highlight the main challenges when approaching it. We also review recent developments on the existence theory of martingale solutions to this equation and discuss the existence results in the situation that the noise term is nonlinear in more detail.
