Cross-faculty cooperation

TU Delft stimulates multi-disciplinary and cross-faculty research that aims at responsible, societal innovation. We connect our research systematically to societal challenges. The research questions emerging from these problems are often so complex that they can only be answered by joining forces. The Delft Research-based Initiatives (DRI’s) and the TU Delft Institutes are university-wide partnerships on specific topics.

Delft Research-based Initiatives (link)
Health, energy, globalization and infrastructures & mobility are among the most important themes in today's society. For this reason, TU Delft has established Delft Research based Initiatives (DRIs) in these four areas. A DRI aims to make an important scientific contribution to solving issues facing society that relate to these four themes, working from a thematic, multidisciplinary cooperation. The DRIs engage with government and business, identify important opportunities and actively spotlight innovative science.

TU Delft Institutes (link)
The TU Delft Institutes bundle the research capacity of TU Delft in university-wide partnerships in specific fields of research, many of which are relatively young: the TU Delft Institutes. This virtual clustering of high-quality research capacity enhances the university’s visibility within this field of research and positions us optimally to join (international) consortiums and networks, and to be attractive to scientific talent. 

Other forms of cross-faculty cooperation
Besides the DRI’s and Institutes, there are also other forms of cross-faculty cooperation. For example, the Faculty of Applied Sciences (AS) and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS), collaborate with TNO in QuTech, an advanced research center in the field of quantum computing and quantum internet. The Faculties of Applied Sciences (TNW), Mechanical Engineering (ME), Technology, Policy and Management (TPM) and Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS), cooperate in the e-Refinery consortium to electrify and decarbonise the chemical and energy industry. Within AiTech, scientists from different faculties cooperate in the field of autonomous technology and human responsibility in digital societies.

Those are just some examples. The TU Delft faculties cooperate intensively in many other projects.
