Wijnand Veeneman appointed full professor
As of May 2024, the Executive Board of Delft University of Technology has appointed Wijnand Veeneman as full professor of governance of infrastructure and mobility.
Wijnand Veeneman researches governance of infrastructure and mobility, and how that governance (the ruleset for actions making decisions together) drives the choices in those systems. For instance, how does governance explain why France jumpstarted the European high speed train network and urban tram renaissance? How do the tendering processes for public transport shape solutions, such as the adoption of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT)? How can governance of energy and transport support the transition to sustainable mobility?
Veeneman’s goal is to assist engineers in ensuring that their innovations align effectively, as implementation relies heavily on this alignment.
“Research should always aim to create societal value and help make the world a better place for those in it.” Veeneman states.
Wijnand has been at TPM since its inception, focusing on the intersection of engineering and governance. Over the past seven years, he has strengthened the bridge between key Dutch infrastructure managers and the academic community in Delft and beyond. This collaboration aims to enhance the alignment of research and practical applications, ultimately maximizing the societal value of infrastructures and mobility.
Wijnand: “It is a weird and wonderful feeling that the community that I helped build since 1993 is now recognising me in this way. I feel deeply connected to the thinking we have developed and the role we play within Delft, with that focus on creating value to the world. The Delft view of “if it functions, it must be factual” is close to my heart. I thoroughly enjoy developing ideas and seeing whether they function as expected in the complexity of the real world.”
