Research on climate-induced displacement awarded Seed Fund Grant
Every year climate-related disasters force millions of people to leave their homes, with large social, mental and economic impacts as result. Jasper Verschuur will analyse human mobility patterns before, during and after past climate events. This will provide new insights in who is being displaced, where these people go and how long it takes before they return. Additionally, the underlying geographical, socio-demographic and economic factors that shape these processes will be studied.
Results of this project can pave the way for new predictive models of human displacement and recovery. And provide valuable input for disaster risk assessments and climate adaptation strategies. ‘Existing climate risk assessment often ignore human displacement, and its associated impacts. Our project can help create more targeted adaptation strategies to help those most affected by climate extremes’, explains Jasper.
Jasper Verschuur, Srijith Balakrishnan and Tina Comes were awarded a Seed Fund Grant to further this climate-related research project.
