First edition of the joint UNICAMP – TU Delft Executive International Academic Leadership Program

News - 28 November 2024

As part of the festivities surrounding 25 years of TU Delft-UNICAMP collaborations, we have launched a unique course for (associate)professors, the 1st joint UNICAMP – TU Delft Executive International Academic Leadership Program (EIALP). The program aims to transfer and extend existing expertise while providing support to academics with an ambition to become leaders in international collaboration.

The program builds on the lessons learned by TU Delft and UNICAMP on how to develop and maintain a durable relationship, creating added value in a reciprocal way by executing joint education and research activities. “Through the program we explore key criteria for successful international collaboration, including on visions and strategies, communication, partner relations, but also on knowledge safety, dealing with power relations and political and cultural sensitivities.  Together we develop the skills that are required to develop and lead future international strategies” says Prof. Patricia Osseweijer, TU Delft Ambassador Brazil. “This year we have 6 candidates from TU Delft and 6 from UNICAMP. The unique opportunity to do this program this academic year together with our Brazilian colleagues adds an important cultural perspective”. Many courses offered on international leadership focus on company perspectives, this program uniquely focuses on academic partnerships.

The program consists of interactive sessions and lectures by international experts, skill training, and a group assignment by both University Boards, supervised by a mentor. Participants in the program will share visions on international collaboration, discuss structure and power relations in universities, learn about cultural sensitivity, integrity and safety and explore public-private-government cooperation, all the while keeping in mind (geo)political trends.

At the end of the program, researchers will be able to develop and convincingly justify a vision for academic international collaboration and identify, develop and negotiate a strategic program and leadership role, as well as work with sensitive information and cultural sensitivities and identify and take advantage of opportunities in public private collaborations.

The IALP was launched in Delft on November 4 by Unicamp Rector Antonio Meirelles and Interim Vice Rector Magnificus Hans Hellendoorn. Joint online sessions will continue over the coming months before the program ends with a week together in Campinas in May 2025. The group assignments focus on four themes 1) Decision making for International Collaboration; 2) Increase innovation and tech transfer in international settings; 3) Joint education; 4) Excellence through international collaboration. The resulting advice will be presented to the Boards of the Universities during the final week in Brazil.
