Today it is Global Recycling Day. An important day to give some extra attention to our strategy to manage the waste streams at TU Delft. Students and staff use many materials on campus, which means that we have multiple waste streams on campus. It is up to us to manage these waste streams in a sustainable way.
Students and staff use all kinds of materials on campus to carry out their daily activities. These include, for example, office supplies, furniture, food waste, paper, and hazardous materials. Michiel Faber, Coordinator of Logistics and Environment at TU Delft, says that waste is separated at TU Delft but large ‘behind the scenes’. This is also due to a large proportion of chemical and hazardous substances. These materials cannot be put together.
R-Hierarchy
To make separation of waste easier TU Delft has placed waste separation islands at several locations. Still a lot of waste is not yet separated in the right way. We have a focus on the R-Hierarchy. By doing so, we will work on a sustainable waste stream. The first step is to reject and reduce the request for materials. Then we will focus on reusing our materials. Ultimately, we want to move toward a circular flow on campus.
