Aad van der Vaart to become President of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis
Aad van der Vaart has been elected President Elect of the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA). His term will start on January 1, 2023, and a year later he will take over the presidency of the Society. You can read more about his academic career in his Science Story.
ISBA is the leading international organization devoted to Bayesian Analysis. It promotes the use of Bayesian Analysis and encourages research and innovation in the field. It serves as a platform for the exchange of ideas between researchers and practitioners, and provides an avenue for the dissemination of new ideas and techniques. Main events are the two-yearly ISBA world meetings, but the nine sections of the Society organise also many smaller activities.
Bayesian Analysis is a paradigm in statistics, and provides a unified framework for the modelling of uncertain events. It allows to formulate conclusions based on statistical data in the form of probabilities. It is based on Bayes's Theorem, which expresses the probabilities of the states of a system given data through the product of the prior probabilities and the probability of the data given the state. The Bayesian method is used to solve complex problems in many fields, such as finance, medicine, engineering, and even philosophy. It is also popular in artificial intelligence.
