TU Delft is collaborating with Firma van Buiten, for their new building in TU Delft Campus South, which needs to become a circular, energy-neutral premise.
The intention is to have the heat system mainly run on aquathermal energy, i.e. heat extracted from water. This can be achieved by means of a heat exchanger in combination with a heat pump and a thermal energy storage system. A distinction can be made between heat from open water, waste water, and drinking water. In the case of Firma van Buiten, which is situated next to a canal, open water is going to be the source. At present, different options are being studied.
This initiative is in line with other developments and studies related to aquathermal energy, such as the sheet wall pilot in Zweth, close to TU Delft, led by Dr. Phil Vardon and Dr. Ivo Pothof.
